Organic Skincare – Are You Sure You Know What That Really Means??

When we look at organic skincare, we have to be very careful indeed that we do not fall into the trap of thinking that it is just as it says on the labelling. In a way, this dishonest labelling is permitted by the American authorities. For example, the terms organic and natural as defined by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines it as ‘being minimally processed with no artificial ingredients’. This is open to lots of interpretation and misinterpretation and that is why we have to tread rather carefully here.

Pick up a typical skincare product and it may well have delicious and healthy sounding plant and botanical ingredients such as aloe vera, avocado, natural vitamin E, jojoba oil, babassu and so on. But it is when you look closer that you realize that these ingredients are actually very far down the list. This means that they are there in very small quantities indeed. Then when you look closely, you see the nasty synthetic ingredients and they are there in force!

Which ones do I mean? Most of the so-called best anti aging products are still using the old glycol, steric acid, parabens, propylene gycol, sodium laurel and polysorbates.  When we look at California, it seems to be ahead of other states in that it at least banned the 1,4 dioxane which is generally regarded as being a carcinogen.

California is also the home of a very interesting lawsuit which has hit the headlines recently. There is a class action lawsuit pending at the moment. This was brought to court because the Californian law states that products which are labelled as organic skincare must have at least 70% organic content. There are over twenty popular brands which have been accused of false and misleading advertising.

So, we need natural, organic plant extracts for our skin. Why? Because this is what is most compatible with our skin and the content of antioxidants are the best possible answer to fighting the free radicals which tend to deplete and slow down the skin cell production.

We need ingredients in active quantities  which are natural oils and plant extracts.  There are also special ingredients which keep the hyaluronidase at bay, thereby preserving our levels of hyaluronic acid. Then there is a collagen booster which gets the collagen going again. These are the main culprits when it comes to skin aging.

You should be on the look out for avocado oil, oilivem 800, phytessence wakame and also shea butter. These are the organic skincare ingredients which will really help to turn back the clock.  They are a hundred times more effective than any old collagen cream that may be offered to you at an exorbitant price!
